Presented by Dr. Chobany, in this webinar she explores in-depth, the auditory system, hearing loss, and its impact on overall cognitive health. Attendees will gain a clear understanding of how the ear processes sound, the types and causes of hearing loss, and how it can affect communication and mental well-being. Dr. Chobany also provides an overview of hearing devices including hearing aids and cochlear implants, offering insights into how these technologies can improve quality of life.

Learning Objectives

  1. Explain the types of hearing loss: Participants will be able to accurately identify and describe the two main types of hearing loss (conductive and sensorineural) and provide at least two examples of causes for each type.
  2. Analyze the link between hearing loss and cognitive decline: Participants will be able to summarize at least two mechanisms by which hearing loss can contribute to cognitive decline (e.g., social isolation, increased cognitive load, and brain structure changes) and cite at least two research studies supporting this connection.
  3. Implement strategies for hearing care: Participants will be able to list and explain at least three practical strategies for managing hearing loss, including screening, use of assistive devices, and communication techniques, and demonstrate how to effectively communicate with someone experiencing hearing loss.
